Frequently asked questions
Smartlipo w/PALS– Laser Liposuction/ Power Assisted LipoSculpture Description
The procedure is performed by introducing a fine-optic cannula (tube) 1.0mm in diameter under the skin which delivers low-level laser energy – this selectively breaks up fat cells (a process know as lipolysis) transforming them into an oily substance that is absorbed and eliminated by the body, (which helps to avoid the damage to blood vessels and nerve endings often associated with traditional liposuction), however it has been noted that it is dramatically more beneficial to the speed and results of the treatment for suction to be used which is called Power Assisted Liposuction (PALS). Smartlipo w/PALS is ideal for treating small areas of the face, neck, arms, male breasts (gynecomastia), “bra fat,” “love handles,” “saddle bags,” inner and outer thighs, knees and other areas of loose or sagging skin.
1. What are the benefits of Smartlipo w/PALS?
• Treats unwanted fat and fat tissue irregularities.
• Treats loose sagging skin.
• Minimal swelling and bleeding.
• Minimal bruising (if any).
• Far less downtime that traditional liposuction
• Promotes collagen production, resulting in skin tightening.
2. Does laser-assisted lipolysis produce lasting results?
Yes! The Smartlipo w/PALS procedure permanently destroys the treated fat cells while suctioning them out. Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, that person’s fat cells are simply expanding. Should you gain weight, that fat will most likely be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.
3. Does the procedure have FDA clearance?
Smartlipo has been cleared by the FDA for laser-assisted lipolysis.
4. Who is a good candidate for the procedure?
Ideal candidates are in good health, close to normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results. If the person has areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then that person is a candidate for laser-assisted lipolysis.
5. Who should not undergo this procedure?
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not suitable candidates. Patient’s lab results will be reviewed by Dr. Wassesrman and/or qualified staff member(s) to determine whether patients are healthy enough to move forward with treatment. Smartlipo w/PALS is not a cure for obesity. If you are generally healthy and not obese, Smartlipo w/PALS could help you lose inches and to re-contour your body with minimal risk.
6. How many treatments are required?
For most patients only one treatment is required. The session my last from 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated. Laserlipolysis is also an ideal choice for “touch up” and revisions.
7. Does it hurt?
The actual procedure is generally well tolerated, due to the local anesthesia. You may feel a tugging vibration sensation during treatment, but should not feel pain. People may experience minor swelling, bruising or tenderness for a few days or weeks following treatment.
8. How long will I need to wear my compression garment?
The rule of thumb has been 24 hours per day for the first 7-10 days (based on your doctor’s instructions) for the 1st stage garment. The garment should only be removed for showering. At the end of this period, the bruising should have diminished to more yellow in color. If swelling is still observed, put the 1st stage garment back on for another day. If a 2nd stage garment has been provided, you may now transition to wearing this during waking hours (about 10-12 hours per day). If no 2nd stage is being used, you can wear the 1st stage garment during the day for the period recommended by your physician.
When lipo is being performed on the chin/neck area, it is not necessary to wear the head and neck wrap or band for more than 24 hours. For that reason, only one is required.
Secondary Garments can be purchased at:
Sears- Dr. Rey’s shape wear
Nordstrom’s- Spanks
9. Why do I need to wear a compression garment?
Compression garments are put on the patient right after surgery for the following reasons. First, the garments help to minimize swelling. Second, they flush out harmful fluids. Third, the garments improve circulation and therefore, speed up healing. And last, the garments help the body conform to your new contours.
10. Is it normal to feel more swollen on the third day post treatment?
Since fluids are being flushed from the site of your procedure, swelling of the legs and/or ankles is common. It is also common for the body to take a few days to realize that a procedure has taken place. (You have probably heard about people being in an automobile accident and not noticing neck and shoulder pain for a day or two.) This new swelling is normal. If it lasts more than a day or seems excessive, contact your doctor.
11. What is the difference between first and secondary state garments?
First stage garments are made to provide a secure compression. They allow for ease when putting them on and taking them off by offering a hook and eye and zipper combination. The one that we provide offers a cotton lining for comfort against the skin. Our garments are crotch- less so that it is not necessary to pull the garment up and down to use the restroom. Our goal with the compression garments we use it provide comfort while meeting the medial parameters. The second stage garments are more like a shaper or girdle. They are made with a higher percentage of nylon content (as opposed to the polyester and cotton used for the first stage). These garments are used to transition from the first stage). These garments are used to transition from the first stage to the point where you do not need to wear a compression garment at all.
12. How do I care for my garments?
It is recommended that the garments be hand washed or placed in a washing machine using the delicate cycle. They should NEVER be placed in the dryer. (This could cause the garment to shrink and then become unusable). Woolite is not a good choice for items that have elastic characteristics. Use a mild detergent. To dry the garments, we suggest that you place them flat on a towel. This is the reason that we recommend the purchase of two first stage garments. One needs to be on your body while the other is being washed and is drying.
13. What if I have questions concerning my garments?
Please call the office. I have enclosed an office business card and I ask that you don’t think twice about contacting us.
Please speak with your doctor regarding the amount of time that their office recommends having your wear the garment for the particular surgery. Each case is a little different and it is always the doctor’s call regarding and post-operative care.
It is also important that you contact your doctor immediately if there is a medical concern.
